Re: Fwd: Changing the name of Pantheon Terminal

Personally, I think it should stay like that.

This is not entirely true. The executable is also called pantheon-terminal. Given that I use a terminal a lot to start applications I actually use these names. I think there is nothing wrong in having branded names for the apps.
At least that makes it easier to distinguish them from other 'generic'
applications, as long as they can also be found using the generic name in the
interface.

Also, we would never call things "Pantheon Foo" in the interface. That
would just be redundant and in reality most users will probably never
know or care that the desktop environment they are running is called
pantheon so it's not helpful in any way.

I think there's a strong case to be made for a cross platform app like
Midori to keep its branding because of its portable nature. Same with
BeatBox; this app is much more likely to show up in other distro's
repos and these are apps that users will probably spend a lot of time
in and develop strong opinions about.

However for an app like Dexter or Switchboard that functions as more
of a part of the system than a "real app" (and for which many users of
other desktops will likely have an equivalent that probably blends in
and makes more sense on their desktop) it may be advantageous to
simply refer to them as "Contacts" and "System Settings".

I'm not terribly concerned with how these apps appear on other
desktops because the packaging will almost certainly be different. As
a distributor, we may want some of our apps to have generic names on
our platform and in our repos. But if Dexter or Switchboard or
Pantheon Terminal were packaged in Ubuntu's or Fedora's repos they
would probably be referred to by their branded names in those packages
and not by generic names.

I wholeheartedly agree with Christian. Given that elementary users
may install other applications, and those on other distros may
install elementary applications. It wouldn't work in either case to
name everything "Pantheon xyz". Midori is called Midori Web Browser.
The name makes it simultaneously distinctive and descriptive.
Similarly, calling it Panther Terminal makes it both distinctive and
descriptive.

I disagree. Pantheon Terminal is not consistent with the names of
our other apps and should be changed so that it is consistent. Or,
we could change the names of all the other apps to have "Pantheon"
in front of it's name + the apps function after (Pantheon
Calendar, Pantheon Email, Pantheon Web Browser), but I think that
is ridiculous and sounds bad.

Even if pantheon terminal has the name Panther, we can still refer
to it as "Terminal" in slingshot.

Shnatsel, the app naming section is really speaking more to
third-party apps that want to have a unique brand. One thing
we've been talking about that needs to be addressed is when we
have stock apps that we want to call by a generic name.

For example, we might just want to refer to Dexter as
"Contacts," Geary as "Mail," etc. And not just the .desktop, but
actually rename the apps themselves so it'd be reflected in the
title, about menu, etc.

It's something we're working on and will update the HIG with.
However, I really strongly think we should keep Terminal as
simple and expected as possible.

Thank to FreeDesktop.org [2] specs, it's up to the
application launcher
what to display in such cases (see

http://elementaryos.org/docs/human-interface-guidelines/desktop-integration/app-launchers
[3]).
"Panther" is OK IMHO and it's compliant with
