Yes, but they had the financial backing from Canonical.
Anyway, Launchpad is free and Bitbucket is not. The other two
advantages over Bitbucket as I see it are the support for mailing
lists and a more mature system for handling bugs and blueprints.
I don't see much difference between bzr and hg.
