That's a really good point - I filed a few similar bugs on this. The main problem is: Launchpad has lots of support for people running multiple series, but the download widget only seems to show the latest one. For Bazaar, for instance, we'd like to point people to the latest stable and the latest beta release, and also do something to make sure there's always a windows and mac binary visible there, perhaps by embagoing releases.
A thought about downloads, looking at the Bazaar project page. When I'm viewing this on a Mac, why even show me Windows binaries? When I view the page on Ubuntu, why would I care about anything other than the PPA, and maybe a .deb and/or .tgz?
Most download pages I view these days (e.g. Mozilla, or Opera, or OpenOffice) do enough browser sniffing to present me with just the download binary I care about, with a link for "more options".
