Re: [LTS] I'm very confused
LTS - Long Term Support - A few thoughts.
While Canonical have a definition for LTS on the 'buntu flavours, it is
ultimately up to the user to decide what is 'Long' and what is 'Support'.
The people behind LXLE have declared it an LTS release, quote:
" ...with plans of incremental updates until the next LTS release.
Although not an official LTS release for Lubuntu. It is the only de
facto one."
Whether this is good enough is up to you.
I have Lubuntu 12.04 on a couple of machines. I have taken the decision
that the bug and especially the security fixes provided by Canonical are
adequate for these machines and the use they put to.
The suggestion that answering a users questions for x number of years
(instead of saying "sorry mate, EOL - upgrade") could be considered LTS,
by some, is also true. I know of a situation like this with industrial
controllers running 6.06LTS. Basically somebody on the end of the phone
tells the user which buttons to press to determine whether it's a
hardware or software fault and then either gets them to restore the
software or sends somebody out to repair the hardware. Canonical also
assist in this by have the repos available at
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com.
