Re: OCA News

Hello Joël and all,

just a few comments regarding Akretion and our projects: we are likely to
ask a contributor agreement for a copyright grant to OCA for the major
projects we lead (for future contributions). We will probably ask that for
the ~20 localization modules for Brazil for instance as this will be a
better trade off than just grant to Akretion on one side or plain chaos on
the other side. As we have seen granting some rights to OCA doesn't mean
contributor loose their copyrights, so I think it's both fair and also
something to secure OpenERP in the future (protect against capitalistic
take overs via licensing tricks, allow license actualization etc...)

Also, I think a topic we will have in September will be how can we both
tell a project complies to OCA review rules and quality standards, while
possibly not using a 'common' Launchpad branch. Great modules are being
developed in isolated specific branches (as a reminder we currently choose
to group branches mostly because we don't have a decent standard package
manager to install modules and right dependencies deterministically both
for deployment, testing and development purposes. Some other modules are
being built on other platforms also, like Github or Bitbucket shame clone).
You already stated that OCA won't impose the tooling. We will then need to
define better at witch peer review conditions a project can elect to the
OCA umbrella. I think that would be pretty straightforward to define, I
just wanted to mention it.

Finally, I think people shouldn't fear who is or isn't an OCA founder. For
years, OCA's founder have been having a day job integrating OpenERP for
real paying customers and aren't here to highjack anybody's else work.
Instead the goal is just to set up the minimal foundation to ensure
community effort isn't thrown in the trash or isn't a weak prey for
capitalistic take overs no matter the financial wealth of some. So it's
just about decisions made at OCA having legitimacy in the community and
delegating nearly everything to the community itself, following the pretty
much straightforward open source meritocracy to ensure the people making
the effort that matters get rewarded for it and hence encourage the
eco-system to grow for real. Also many modules will probably keep developed
outside OCA's umbrella, and that's perfect this way. The goal will not be
trying to tell which modules are OCA or not, their author will decide much
as they like. The goal will be just to ensure third party have a strong
juridic and organizational umbrella to collaborate on essential modules
that are our public wealth.

Best regards.
