I was just fighting with _exactly_ the same issue.

The problem, as far as my interpretation goes, is the so called Fake RAID.
Ubuntu / Linux simply cannot recognize this kind of RAID at boot time. There
ARE workarounds (module dmraid) which can be found here:

The first didn't work for me, haven't tried the latter.

What finally DID work for me was the following:

Took me over 2 days. I now have Karmic set up with a soft RAID 0, the Fake
RAID is disabled in BIOS.
