I'd fully agree...  If you tap the external mic or tap the laptop near the
internal mic with gains turned up to maximum you can get maximum deflection
of the input meter but it takes something that should heavily clip to get to
the level of what normal voice should bring things to.

This sounds to me like a digital mic in the absence of a software amplifier.

Maybe the driver is fine then, and the problem is that some necessary 
alsa/pulse configuration got lost in the 11.04 shuffle.
