Deb format (was Re: Introductions...)

I'm interested in this.  I'm aware of the differences between the
formats but I think the Debian format has its own advantages.

What specific problems are you running into?  How do you use the RPM
format?  What sort of tools do you use?

Have you tried checkinstall to create debian packages from “make
install”?
