Thanks for the pointer. I will test and see if it gives what I'm looking
for.

I poked around in the file system to see where it stores the fetched
tiles of OSM and it seems to be here:

the 10 or the 18 is the resolution of the map and the remaining part
gives the coordinate of the tile; they are all stored in only one
directory and not in subdirs (which would be make the access faster, I
think).

I will test if I can pre-fetch tiles with my shell script I'm using for
the Openmoko foxtrotgps. This is for locations where you don't have
access (or only expensive access) to Internet with your mobile, for example in Cuba.

Was foxtrotgps never ported as an app to ubuntu-phone? It is there for
the normal desktop.
