Same for me, but once I got it I liked it. 
I'm that kind of a person that doesn't use a casing for the phone and thus had quite a few rejected calls‎ on other devices. 

On BlackBerry for instance the sliding direction is indicated with an animation.

I don't think that the problem is about the need to slide. The problem
is that the UI is quite non-obvious, and it took me a couple of missed
calls to understand how I have to slide.
