[Bug 589140] [NEW] [i855] VGA out flickering after upgrade to lucid

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hi,

I am experiencing problems with the VGA Output in 10.04 (lucid), but it
worked fine in 9.10 (karmic). I did a clean installation, not an
upgrade, but could verify that the problems are not there in 9.10 by
using the livecd. I have tried many of the suggested KMS-related
workarounds (including disabling DRI, using glasen's 855gm-fix ppa,
disabling KMS on boot etc.) and also tried x-updates and x-retro PPAs to
use driver 2.8 and 2.11 instead of 2.9. However, the problem with the
black screen went away, but with *each* of the various combinations I
get screen flickering on the VGA output, when screen updates are made
(i.e. keyboard input or mouse movement).

I am using the 1024x768 resolution on the internal screen, and also
1024x768 on the external output. I tried this with 2 beamers and one
external monitor - the same problem persists everywhere. When I change
the external output's resolution to a higher resolution like 1152x862 or
1280x1024, the problems are gone. By switching to a lower resolution
(i.e. 800x600), the problems still persist.

I have tried various of the intel driver's options (disabling DRI,
pageflip, using UXA rendering etc.) but none of my attempts was
successful in adressing this problem.

I have attached a demonstration video of the problem and the system
information collected by apport.
