Re: Unity sidebar improvement.
The panel can't be movable due to three reasons:
A) The indicators are not designed for usage with vertical panel
B) The Dash button is on the top left on the launcher at Dash control
buttons (e.g. close and maximize) are on the left of the panel. What
happens if the panel is at the bottom? The Dash button will be on top left
and the close and maximize buttons on the bottom left?
C) Currently the panel is also a titlebar + menubar when an app is
maximized, cuz it hosts the window control buttons ( close, maximize,
minimize) and the menubar. What happens if the panel is at the bottom and
one tries maximizes an app? The window button and the menubar go to the
bottom?
Adjustable width panel is more interesting, however there is another issue
here:
The panel in now 24px width and the window control buttons feet just fine,
but if it gets wider we will have the following situation when an app is
maximized:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Window controls buttons ---- menubar --- indicators
Empty space
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional panels:
Where would you put additional panel? Top and left are not an option, cuz
they are already taken by the current panel and launcher.
Right is also not an option, cuz the appindicators are not designed to be
used with vertical panel. Bottom is also not and option, cuz the left end
of the panel will overlap with the bottom left end of the launcher.
Can you provide a graphic mockup for this part, kinda hard to get your
ideas with just text and schematics drawn using dots and dashes:

There is Compiz window preview plugin, but it's no way near as good as
Windows Aero Peek (or God saves KDE's icon task), there is bug report about
including "a la Aero Peek" functionality in Unity, but Mark Shuttleworth
doesn't approve it.
Err, the Alt+Tab already cycles between windows ... or I did not got that?
:P
