Three things come up to my mind:
1. Replace to "add" dialog with something more suitable for average
users.
2. Add DnD from Launcher to 'Startup Applications' and add an info text
like: "press the 'add' button or drag an application from the Launcher to
the list"
3. Add all start up applications to the list that run in background and
are meant to be controlled by an average user, Gwibber for example starts
on log-in but there is no menu entry in startup applications right now -
#945761 <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwibber/+bug/945761>.
