What about having a "first run" routine that scans the user's home directory
for any folders containing Zim notebooks and builds the path, then offers to
let the user add paths directly, or scan another directory for folders to
add to the path.  Once this is done the first time there wouldn't be a need
to scan again, or if the user needs to add additional notebooks, it could be
done through the preferences menu.

This kind of model should be something that users are already familiar with
as it is in line with the way many music players handle building / scanning
the user's library the first time.
