Using .9 or .99 for the minor version number when the major version number is about to go up by 1 is a fairly common numbering system. Someone suggested using a tag instead. The problem with using a tag is that it only works when you are looking at the source code. The tag isn't visible in the top bar of a running program which is where I would like to see a number that makes me know for sure which version of code I'm using. It may be that I have both 5.1 and master running at the same time.
