I have an intel_backlight along with the acpi_video0 in the /sys/class/backlight directory. I wonder if that's the problem. Do you have the i915 and drm modules loaded. Make sure you have kms (modesetting) enabled. Check your /etc/modprobe.d directory for something like i915-kms.conf with options i915 modest=1 in it.
