OK, the missing intel_backlight could be the problem.
I have i915 compiled, and now I have
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y
# CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS is not set

If I enable DRM_I915_KMS and put i915 as module, I get a blank screen
at the end of the boot process.
I've also created the file /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf with the
following content:
option i915 modest=1

I am not able to reboot even with the ALT+Print+{e,i,s,u,b}. :(
The system becomes unresponsive and I have to press the shutdown
button (by the way, it is the same problem
I have when I try the "sleep" function by KDE).

I don't know if this has something to do with my problem but I use
uvesafb, as described here:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/uvesafb/
