Mouse hovering over a window is considered an specific user-action (in fact hovering over a surface and waiting a short delay is how gadgets like msft kinect work) and makes the work for a lot of people faster or sometimes is the only choice. However it being optional (for users in your case) does not hurt.

I would assume some people also prefer the right click quicklist option in windows instead of the thumbnails. You might find a way to disable them and use either keyboard and/or right click.

>>>What do you use to select a specific window if you dont like the thumnails/previews ?

Selecting windows is not a problem in ubuntu because everything has tabs (eg, nautilus, terminal, firefox, gedit, etc), so I rarely have multiple windows open.

But for the rare occasion when I do momentarily need another window open or for the select few apps that do not have tabs (eg, Writer), Alt+` (grave) is simpler, faster, and an easier way to select the window I want than using Windows 7 taskbar thumbnails (in my opinion).

If I really need to "see" the windows I have open then I use the Spread function. I like how thumbnails are presented ubuntu's "spread mode" a lot better than how they are presented in Windows 7. I also like how Spread mode results from a specific user-action, as opposed to Windows 7 which activates the feature simply from the mouse moving over the icon.

is always visible now.

And any hover action would/should only be triggered if launcher is fully visible (even when in auto hide mode) and then it takes a second or 2 for the hover action to display at a specific (or your desire) spot/app.

i use win7 at work and i dont find a problem with the thumbnails, in fact they help because is the basic way of selecting the desired window. What do you use to select a specific window if you dont like the thumnails/previews ?

Anyway my suggestion of adding a list of open windows to the quicklist is by right clicking so i assume they wont interfere with your work.

The same way you accidentally trigger the Launcher. For example you are reading something on screen and the mouse is in the way so you (without thinking) move the mouse off to the left to get it out of the way and because the mouse lands on top of the launcher, Thumbnail previews start popping up.

I do accidentally trigger the tooltips, all the time. Be nice to be able to disable Launcher tooltips. They aren't needed once familiarity sets in. But I can certainly see how they are needed on new installs in general.

In general, things popping up on the desktop is a big distraction to work. I find the thumbnail popups distracting when using windows 7. I can only assume it would present the same problem on ubuntu.

I think a list of open windows could be added to the quicklist. Is simple and would come in handy.

And since they keep their order, is predictable.

I also dont see how you would "accidentally" trigger things on the left side if the launcher is *always visible*. Even in firefox the back button is all the way at the top and you can see exactly where the launcher is... I dont even accidently trigger the tooltips...

>>>2) Not able to jump strata to the app or document you are working on

I cannot stand those dang thumbnail popups that occur on Windows 7. I do not think this will be an improvement to the situation, especially considering the ease with which they can unintentionally be triggered due to the Launcher being on the left edge of the screen (and not the bottom of the screen like Windows 7).
