Can you boot with nomodeset on the kernel command line?

If you can get to a prompt that way, you can presumably find out which
module is blowing up -- try

rmmod i915
modprobe i915 modeset=1

to re-load the Intel driver with mode setting, and similarly with
nouveau instead of i915 for the nVidia one.
