My solution to that is to buy a hard drive (small by todays standards) and pop that in. I give them the old one: "Keep it carefully; it will only take me five minutes to put it back and you'll be back to exactly where you are now". After a respectable wait, I can put the old hard drive back as extra storage, and re-format it!
Yes indeed, I did consider that, however, the user is typically still locked into some Windows stuff. In one case the change form OE to thunderbird has yet to occur, but is seriously planned, in another case Windows games are the hook, although this is loosening with time. In three recent cases the machines have been laptops, where a second drive is possible in ways, but less convenient. I think that many people are very beset with still being able to access the supposed magic in the Wonderful Windows with all of its secrets and mysterious grottos and caverns, and the distant promise of streets of gold, somewhere.......
Interestingly the OE to Thunderbird laptop owner has a different friend at both shoulders. Me on one side saying Ubuntu is less confusing than Windows. And another close friend who is saying 'Don't touch Linux with a barge pole!'
Nice that Ubuntu seems to be winning in this one! -- alan cocks Ubuntu user
