Well, Android (and also others I think) does it like that: when you have a picture open, and swipe it to the left or to the right, it goes to the previous/next picture. I wouldn't say that is has to be like this just because others handle it like that, but at least users are used to this behavior.

If I'm looking at a picture - and I swipe from the middle to anywhere - I'm simply trying to pan the image (or map or web page or whatever) around.

I keep saying, gestures from the edges in are pretty safe, but the main part of the screen is for the app, not for navigation or other tricks.
