I verified it today with a local file, and it still happened. I
had thought maybe it was due to playing over NFS, but nope.

Oh, it does work already. Apt-get install nfs-common, mount
host:/foo /mnt/foo, browse to it via file manager, launch a
video. It doesn't work *well*, but it does at least work. It
tends to randomly freeze, until I manually do a small seek to
un-stick it.
