It's an option for the OS X dock and I always used it there. I agree
it's not necessary, just a possible option to think about and my
mockup leaves this option open. IMO more important is to indicate
hidden windows in the expose view.

Actually, right now an indicator for hidden apps makes no sense
because while Unity is more app-centric the applications used on top
of unity aren't (yet) app-centric and unlike on OS X you can't quickly
hide or focus all windows of a particular application with one
click/key-combination. Going forward with the application-centric
paradigm this certainly needs to be addressed as well.
