There are a few problems with that approach:
- If the number is quite large, like 1000, there won't be enough
horizontal space for the spinner.
- It's small and hard to see, especially when you shrink launcher
icons down to 32px.
What about some kind of throbbing effect on the launcher icon itself,
not unlike the one that's used when the application is starting? I
guess an issue is that it could send mixed messages, because that
effect is only used when an application starts. On the other hand, I
usually take it to mean, "hold on, stuff is happening, I'll be ready
for you as soon as possible", which fits this case.
