Since so many problems were pointed out with making a universal solution
, I'll once again throw in the idea of customization in - when Ubuntu
can't supply a lightweight and functional menu for everyone at once -
why not let the user do a personal fit ? Just a little brush (or
whatever customization symbol) icon in the upper/lower right corner ,
that opens a checklist of components to show, or just all available
items will appear in place of the menu with checkboxes in front and
after rearranging - click the button again and that's that (with ,say,
"System settings" and "Shut down" fixed for some consistency (and maybe
a Win7-like arrow on the shut down button , so whatever the user does
,no functionality can be lost) ) .
