Keep in mind that besides the wysiwyg editor, data needs to have a
consistent format so it can e stored and it's convenient if that format can
be red by the human eye when unparsed.the asterisks are a broadly used
convention in many formats, so widespread that some people even use them
when writting things by hand.

Personally, I use ctrl-... shortcuts all the time. But the reason why Jaap
wants to keep autoformating is clear and valid IMO.
