I don't know if it's a typo but the contents should be

options i915 modeset=1

options - plural, not singular and it shouldn't matter what the file is called as long as it has the .conf extension.
Also, if you have the media station plugged in make sure to blacklist the redeon module (if you have it configured) since that crashes the kernel most of the times.
And if your screen goes blank when the xserver attempts to start then it's probably an issue with the xserver intel driver, make sure you have the libdrm-intel libraries installed and the xserver-xorg-video-intell driver (probably called something different in arch, I use debian)
